Portrait of Yves Saint Laurent photographed by Irving Penn
I recently attended the Yves Saint Laurent Retrospective at the Denver Art Museum, and it was fabulous!  I have always admired Saint Laurent (since I did a report on him in 6th grade French class), but I never really understood the significance of his influence in women’s fashion.  Thanks to Saint Laurent, women have pant suits and tuxedos, the safari jacket and pea coat.
Having the opportunity to see his designs, both as sketches and in person, was thrilling.  The rich, sumptuous fabrics and the incredibly way they were draped and tailored was wonderful to behold.

I love lists- I can’t make it through most days without one (or two or three!) School is just about out for the summer, and I have a lot of tasks for both Elysian Studios and my family that need to get accomplished.
Lists are being jotted down everywhere!  For dinner planning, grocery shopping and errand running, vacation dreaming, family gatherings, and all the fun activities we hope to squeeze into the two short months of summer…

“The Lantern Bearers” by Maxfiled Parrish, 1908
oil on canvas, laid down on board
I had the priveledge of seeing this piece at The Crystal Bridges Museum in Bentonville, AR last year.  I cannot tell you how gorgeously luminous those lanterns are in person, but I am obsessed with them today!
Though it was painted in 1908, this painting became widely recognized in 1910 when it appeared on the front of Collier’s Weekly.  The brilliant colors and liquid-smooth sourface of the painting was achieved by a historic painting technique which involves the artist painting multiple layers of oil-thinned color, separating them with thin layers of varnish.
